First Look: Playing Squid Games in CSGO

You’d have had to have been living under a rock not to have taken notice of Squid Game in 2021. The South Korean smash hit became Netflix’s biggest hit of all time. At the time of writing, it’s still the most viewed in Netflix’s extensive library. With the appetite still high for this darkly comic survival thriller, it was only a matter of time before the video games industry. However, you might not have expected Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to be the vehicle for Squid Game’s arrival into the video game sphere.

The Squid Game Phenomenon

Squid Game sees 456 cash-strapped strangers offered the chance of a lifetime. All they have to do to secure a multi-million dollar prize is come out on top in an elimination-style contest made up of classic children’s games. So far, so simple. However, there’s a dastardly fine print attached to this too-good-to-be-true arrangement. Lose out during a round of Squid Game and you lose your head. Or end up with a bullet between the eyes. Or fall to your death.

Somehow, this grim scenario has caught the imaginations of millions. Kids across the globe have been putting their own spin on Squid Game, albeit with less fatal consequences. There have also been calls for a video game adaptation, with Netflix promising there’s something in the pipeline. Some fans simply couldn’t wait for an official release, hence the CS:GO Squid Game mod that’s been doing the rounds recently.

Try the Squid Game Challenges for Yourself

Thanks to the Steam workshop, Squid Game fans can try their hand at several of the most iconic challenges from the hit show. The custom map allows players to attempt the famous ‘Red Light, Green Light’ round. In this fairly accurate CS:GO recreation, players need to cross a deadly field as quickly as they can. However, timing is everything. Make a move just a second too late and you’re out of the game.

You can also attempt the ‘Tug of War’ challenge. Inspired by one of the most memorable scenes from the series, this round sees players split between two teams. Those who fail to maintain mastery over the rope will fall to their virtual deaths.

Remember the ‘Glass Tile Game’ from episode seven? If you were shouting at the screen with suggestions on how to beat this seemingly impossible challenge, you now have the chance to test out your strategy virtually. Should you succeed and cross the bridge in one piece, you’ll be forced to do battle with fellow survivors in an all-or-nothing melee fight. All mod games currently on offer allow up to 64 individual players to join in the fun.
