Photographing your inventory with Pinterest in mind

One of the most important social media sites for an eCommerce store is Pinterest. Pinterest targets individuals who are in the mood to buy while at the same time creating opportunities for that all important impulse purchase. When you are designing the layout of your eCommerce site, it’s important to bear in mind that the way that you photograph and present your inventory will go a long way toward getting it repinned and making you money on Pinterest.

Make the Pictures Interesting

The first thing you should do is make sure that your pictures are interesting. The more interesting the picture is, the more likely your customers are to repin it. After all, it’s got to catch their eye. One of the ways that you can make the pictures interesting is by showing the product in your store in a scene where it’s being used. To avoid any confusion, you might want to consider having a couple pictures, one with the product in a stand-alone shot like the kind that you generally see on Amazon. The second one could be the more interesting shot that shows people using it in a fun way.

Use Proper Lighting

Lighting is crucial in photography. You can make something look delightful or appalling simply by the way that you construct the lighting setup. Look for ways to introduce warmth and personality when possible. Remember that fluorescent lights are some of the worst choices when it comes to developing an inviting scene. They tend to bring out the undertones that are best hidden. You also need to be cautious of direct reflection on bright products. If any of your products are metallic, you’ll want to be cautious of that blinding glare that can sometimes strike during a photo shoot. A little bit of flash is all right since that’s what people expect. Try to find ways to make the lighting encourage the conduct you want. While you might struggle to see how the lighting could make people more likely to buy and sell websites, remember that lighting affects people in subtle ways. Warm lighting tends to bring on airs of intimacy and invitation while dimmer but golden light suggests secrecy and exclusivity.

Add Artistic Elements

Don’t assume that once you take the picture that that’s all you have to do. While you don’t necessarily have to invest in Lightshop or Fireworks, you do need to process the photos. When processing, you should look to remove all distractions. Smooth out the wrinkles. Remove any stray hairs. Make it all visually appealing. At the same time, you can also add other artistic elements. You might consider adding in a Gausian blur or playing with the framing. You could set it up in a sepia tone. According to the SEO Journal, photos with artistic elements are significantly more likely to be repinned because viewers see them as having greater value. In many cases, those little touches of artistic interest don’t take much time to add at all.
