Wing’s Blog – Word Lens & Printers

As our FunkyKit East team is in its final round down to our coverage of Computex 2016, we’re preparing ourselves for what we need to bring with us on the trip. Its not just all the technical equipment we have to worry about (namely stuff like who’s bringing the tripod and do have enough SD cards), but all the logistical side of things as well.

Computer 2016

To get our Computex 2016 press badges we have to show the organizers our registration emails. Knowing disorganized I am, when I reach Taipei I will not have enabled international roaming on my smartphone, or have purchased a local data SIM card, so I wouldn’t be able to show them my email. To overcome this, I made screenshots of the email and stored them on my phone. It also seems that we have to physically show the emails, which meant we had to print them out. Having lived without a printer for the last 5 years, this simple task turned into one big obstacle.

The last printer that I did own for 3 years I probably managed to only use it twice, and because of the length of period in-between the 2 uses it meant that the ink had dried up and I had to purchase a new set of inks each time. I never ever printed in colour which meant I would only refill the black ink cartridge, but to my surprise the stupid printer would not let me print in black because the cyan or magenta ink cartridge had run out. I used to feel guilty about purchasing 3rd party inks, as they always warned of them damaging the printer heads, but then you soon realize that the inks costs more than the printer it self. And to the annoyance of the consumer, purchasing a printer at low costs comes with the surprise that it will not come with a USB cable and/or power cable.

Printer Inks

To overcome the email situation, we’ve voted for Winston to print them out at his work, but knowing how disorganized we are, he’ll most probably forget to take them onto the plane with him and we’ll have to hunt down some sort of printing kiosk in Taipei.
