Samsung Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0 to Deliver up to 4,200 MB/s Read and 2,800 MB/s Write Speeds

Samsung has developed the industry’s highest performing Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0 storage solution, which has received JEDEC® board of director approval. What is UFS 4.0 and what does it mean for the future of storage?

Samsung’s UFS 4.0 implements the newest JEDEC® standard specification and enhances our diverse portfolio. Our UFS mobile storage solutions differentiate key technologies in controller design to improve performance and power efficiency.

By collaborating with smartphone and consumer device manufacturers globally, we are working vigorously to foster an ecosystem for UFS 4.0 to drive the market for high-performance mobile storage solutions. Let’s check out the specs behind this new innovation!

UFS 4.0 offers a speed of up to 23.2Gbps per lane, double that of the previous UFS 3.1. That much bandwidth is perfect for 5G smartphones requiring huge amounts of data processing, and is also expected to be adopted in future automotive applications, AR, and VR as well.

With Samsung’s advanced 7th-generation V-NAND and a proprietary controller under the hood, UFS 4.0 will deliver sequential read speed of up to 4,200MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,800MB/s.

Power efficiency has also been enhanced. UFS 4.0 will deliver a sequential read speed of 6.0MB/s per mA, which is a 46% improvement over the previous generation so end users can get more out of their battery life.

Last but not least, UFS 4.0 will come in a compact package with a maximum dimension of 11mm x 13mm x 1mm for more effective space utilization and design convenience, and will come in a variety of capacities ranging up to 1TB.

Mass production is planned to begin in the third quarter of this year. We are excited to see what new devices will be powered by the innovations of UFS 4.0!

Disclaimers:

  1. Read and Write speed may vary depending on test environment.
  2. Universal Flash Storage (UFS) version 4.0 devices are based on the JEDEC® standard specification.
  3. UFS 4.0 references the MIPI® M-PHY v5.0 physical layer specification and the forthcoming MIPI® UniPro v2.0 transport layer specification
