We’ve got some new ram in the lab! This kit comes to us from Patriot, it’s part of their Viper Xtreme line and looks pretty good. The question of course is whether it’ll perform as well as it looks!
It’s a 6gb kit, three 2gb sticks, and hence aimed at the LGA1366 X58 platform, the Core i7 900 series of CPUs. Being 1600mhz memory all of the cpus for this platform should be able to run the rated speed, unlike ram rated at 2000mhz or more that requires a thousand dollar CPU or extreme cooling to fully utilize.
We’ve reviewed many products from Patriot in the past, and my experience with Patriot have been a good one so far. Patriot are direct competitors to OCZ Technology, Super Talent, Kingston, Crucial … basically any manufacturer that produces memory products.

In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Patriot Viper Xtreme DDR3-1600 Tri-Channel 6Gb Kit. These modules are XMP ready, rated to run at DDR3-1600 speeds (PC3-12800) with memory timings of 8-9-8-24. They come with some great looking heatspreaders that feature a copper core to provide improved cooling.
The first thing I notice is that the packaging doesn’t really have room for all three sticks in it, that’s a bit of a downer.
On the plus side, the heatsinks have a layer of copper in them to spread the heat out and the rest of the heatsink is made out of aluminum, this is one of the better setups I’ve seen for stock memory heatsinks. You can find better, but generally only on sticks that cost $300 or more!
To test these we’ll be using the official Bobnova X58 Test Box, which contains the following relevant items:
- Intel Core i7 950 3.2ghz CPU.
- Asus Rampage II Extreme X58 motherboard.
- MSI Radeon 4670 GPU
- Raidmax 530w PSU
