The Box and Pakaging

The Drobo 5Dt is well packaged and comes with 1 x Thunderbolt 2 cable, power adaptor (PSU), power cord, instruction manual and warranty information.

A Closer Look

The Drobo 5Dt unit is surprisingly small. The front panel has magnetic strip along the edges of the cover, and comes off quite easily revealing the drive bays. It is a completely screwless mounting system, which means you just slot the bare 3.5″ hard drives into the slots, and push it in firmly to lock the drive in place.

To remove the hard drive, there is a button/notch on the left side of the drive bays … which when pushed firmly, will pop-out the hard drive for easy replacement.

At the rear of the unit, you’ll find 2 Thunderbolt connectors (one connects to your Macbook, while the other is a bypass for daisy-chaining). Apparently, according to Drobo, you can daisy-chain up to 6 of these Drobo units together!! There’s also an on/off switch, a DC-in power connector and 1 x USB 3.0 port if you want to connect the Drobo to a PC instead.
