Google is using Earth to give people a better understanding of pollution in California. Working with Aclima, an environmental tech company, Google measured air pollution around the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Central Valley. That air quality data was turned into an interactive map on Google Earth.
Gathering this information required covering 100,000 miles over a period of 4,000 hours with Google’s Street View cars. According to Karin Tucen-Bettman, Google Earth’s outreach program manager, hyperlocal data can be used by local organizations to figure out ways to improve air quality. Scientists can also request access to the data here.
