MicFlip in Action
I found that inserting both there USB-A and the micro USB connectors into my ports took a tiny bit more force than normal as they were a tight fit into the ports due to the symmetrical designs. If you look closely at a USB-A connector, the PCB in the middle is slightly off centre, so the MicFlip has to compensate for this with a more flexible PCB, and thus requires a little more force to insert. Same goes to the micro USB connector, but I do like the snug tight fit you end up with.
Even with that little bit more force needed to insert the cable, inserting either end into a port was a cinch as you no long have to be aware of which way is up anymore. And just prove my point, I connected the cable up several times to my USB charging ports and smartphones in the dark successfully each time.
Plugging the MicFlip into a Quick Charge adapter on one of my Android smartphones confirmed that the MicFlip does indeed support Quick Charge. In a comparison test with a standard micro USB cable, the transfer of 1Gb of files to the smartphone by the MicFlip cable took the same time as that of the normal cable, so no loss in performance there.
Verdict & Conclusion
Sometimes the simplest designs can have the biggest impacts, and Winnergear’s MicFlip may even fit into this category for many users. An ingenious double-sided solution that is so simple you do wonder why it took someone so long to release it, and also makes you wonder why the designer(s) of the USB-A and micro USB ports were so backwards in their thinking.
Priced at USD$19.99, the MicFlip may seem expensive to a few buyers, but you do get a lot for your money, and the convenience factor itself would warrant the extra cost.
Personally, I’ll be adding the MicFlip into my arsenal of cables, its just too convenient to pass over, and already it sits comfortably in my equipment backpack.
