Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER PF3 1050W Platinum Power Supply Review

Conclusion and Verdict

There are a ton of power supplies on the market. With ratings ranging from 80 Plus Bronze all the way up to 80 Plus Titanium. So how do you choose the correct power supply that’s right for you? Well, if you’re going to use your system for casual gaming and web browsing, then you seriously don’t need anything more than 750W with a 80 Plus Bronze rating.

Having said that, today’s high-end graphics card can use between 320W to 450W of power, while the latest Intel 14th Gen processor has a Tubo Boost TDP of around 253W+ or higher. So moving up the ladder, if you’re a power user,  gaming enthusiast or someone who needs good stabily during overclocking, then you’ll need a power supply that offers good stability, durability, and reliability, as well as good power efficiency.

The most important thing to look out for is the +12V line. It needs to be solid all the way through, with little or no fluctuation at all, especially durng full load. A single +12V rail is always better (in my opinion) than having multiple +12V rails. It gives you a higher amperage (AMP) for powering high-end GPUs and is capable to handle those high TDPs during Turbo Boost.

For our test rig, we used an Intel Core i9-14900K processor along with the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, which can be quite power hungry at 100% load. During our AIDA64 full load tests, the +12V line on the Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER PF3 1050W PSU dropped ever so slightly from 12.192V to 12.096V. A minute change of only -0.096V. Nothing to be concerned about. For the +5V and +3.3V lines, both were solid with no change at all.

All-in-all, I’m more than happy with the performance, stability and reliability of the power supply, so no complaints here.

The power supply does not come with any RGB, but it does feature a Smart Zero fan on/off switch, which allows you to adjust the fan speed and minimizes undesired noise.

The flat modular cables are great, and allows you to only use the cables you need, and thus making your cable management much easier due to less cables being used.

The question you’re probably asking … do I really need a 80 Plus Platinum rated PSU? Well, A 80 Plus Platinum rating will give you roughly a 89% power efficiency at 100% load, which way more than you’ll ever need for most every day tasks. Anything above 80% is FINE!

However having said that, if you’re running mission critical applications where your CPU and GPU is at 100% full load most of the time … then a 80 Plus Platinum rated PSU may be better suited for you.

Final Thoughts:

If you need to power a bunch of high-end and power hungry components that require the highest stability, durability, reliability and power efficiency, then the Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER PF3 1050W Platinum power supply could be the answer you’re looking for.
