Crucial X8 4TB Portable SSD Review

Specifications and Closer Look

Crucial X8 Specifications:

Interface USB 3.2 Gen-2
Capacities 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB
Sequential read 1050MB/s
Warranty/support Limited 3-year warranty

The same as in lower capacity models, also the 4TB X8 SSD uses an NVMe interface. The maximum rated bandwidth with the USB 3.2 Gen2 port is 1050MB/s. It’s possible on many popular motherboards but not on all. The maximum speed may vary on the used USB controller and its version, but also other factors like USB drivers or used cable.

The SSD arrived to us in a perfect condition with 0TB written and 0 times powered on.

The typical idle temperature is around 30°C. Under load, it goes up to about mid-50°C. There is no problem with thermal throttling or the enclosure getting too hot to put it into a pocket after the finished work.

Crucial provides Storage Executive software, which for some reason, couldn’t recognize the X8 SSD on the test motherboard. Maybe it’s a matter of the USB controller or something else. On the other hand, there was no need to use it as the SSD arrived with the latest firmware, and the X8 is mature enough to be a problem-free product.

Package and its Contents

The X8 4TB SSD arrived to us in a retail package which is a small, flat box. Inside we will find the X8 drive, USB-C to USB-C cable, USB-C to USB-A adapter, and the multilingual quick-start guide. Since it’s an external SSD, we don’t need anything else to connect the X8 to all modern devices with a USB port, including gaming consoles. More detailed user manuals and descriptions are available on Crucial’s website.

The package’s exterior contains all the necessary information, including the general specification, additional features, and contact with support.

Below you can see the package contents described above.

The SSD looks both modern and professional, but it fits every environment, and gamers should like it too. It looks exceptional, and it’s durable at the same time.

Inside the enclosure, we will find an M.2 PCIe drive, which explains the high performance. The drive should be at least as fast as the 2TB version and slightly faster than lower capacities. It’s compatible with every modern PC equipped with a USB port, but the performance depends on its version. If we use a slower standard, then the X8 will still work, but its performance will be limited.

Above there are additional photos of Crucial X8 4TB. Like any other X8 SSD capacity, the tested drive has an adapter that helps us connect it to devices with a USB A-type port. The adapter is also presented in the photos.

The most important for many users is performance, so let’s move to the next page to look at our test results.
