Lexar NM790 2TB PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 SSD Review

The Lexar NM790 is a M.2 PCIe Gen4×4 SSD and adopts a DRAM-Less architecture. It comes in capacities of 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB. The version we’ll be looking at this review is a 2 TB version.

This SSD supports NVMe 1.4 standards and uses the latest 12nm SSD controller from MaxioTech. It offers a sequential read speed of up to 7,400MB/s, and a fast write speed of 6,500MB/s.

It features Host Memory Buffer (HMB) 3.0 and Dynamic SLC cache, which helps maintain fast performance and smooth operation.

What I like about the Lexar NM790 is that it’s compatible with laptops, desktops and even PS5s, which means it’s a great choice for anyone planning to upgrade their storage to 2TB or higher.

What I’ve noticed over the past few months, is that manufacturers are now offering “DRAM-Less” SSDs, and the Lexar NM790 is one of them. Now you might think having no DRAM would affect its performance. Well, not quite. Having no DRAM means less complex PCB, a smaller or simpler flash controller, and lower power consumption. Unless your workload requires a consistently large amount of write/read performance, then perhaps you might need a SSD with DRAM. But for 99% of home users, this does not apply.

Confused and NAND flash memory? Well, there are several types of NAND flash memory used in most of today’s SSDs. The two most popular are SLC and MLC, and now TLC. Here’s a little background taken from HowToGeek.

I would like to send a big thank you to Lexar for the review sample! Here is a snippet of what they have to say about themselves on their website:

Since establishment, Lexar has worked diligently to bring unparalleled value to our customers. We define value as providing well-designed, innovated, and user-friendly products that meet the expectations of customers and enterprises looking for memory solutions to count on.

The Lexar Quality Labs are a group of testing facilities where all Lexar memory card, card reader, and USB flash drives undergo extensive testing to ensure performance, quality, compatibility, and reliability. This provides customers with the highest level of confidence when using Lexar products to capture, manage, move, and store the memories that matter.

We have a team of dedicated lab technicians that test Lexar products with more than 1,100 intended digital devices, including:

  • DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras
  • Video cameras
  • Drones
  • Action cameras
  • Mobile phones
  • Desktop, laptop, and tablet computers
  • Card readers
  • Gaming consoles

In addition to device compatibility testing, technicians in the Lexar Quality Labs also test products for durability by putting them through various vibration, temperature, electric shock, impact, and strength tests. This rigorous testing ensures all Lexar products offer the quality and reliability customers have come to expect from Lexar.

As far as performance is concerned, I’m expecting the NM790 to produce some decent read/write speed similar to their other SSD – the NM800/PRO which we reviewed last year. The only difference between the 2 is price. OK, let’s not waste any time and start by taking a look at the specifications on the next page.

You can buy the Lexar NM790 2TB PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 SSD for around USD $124.99 from Amazon – https://amzn.to/44k8O7W
