Silicon Power DS72 2TB Portable SSD Review

Performance

The performance has been tested on the Intel platform, which contains the Core Ultra 7 265K CPU, ASRock Z890 Taichi OCF motherboard, Teamgroup Xtreem 48GB DDR5-8400 memory kit, and Nvidia RTX 4080 graphics card.
All tests were performed in a Windows 11 Pro x64 environment with the latest updates.

As usual, I will start with the ATTO Disk Benchmark. It’s one of the most popular storage benchmarks, and results are easy to compare at home.

The ATTO Benchmark results are pretty good for the storage type. We barely see the bandwidth matching the specifications in this benchmark, so slightly lower results are still satisfactory. However, the DS72 shows thermal throttling in the middle of the test. About the same, we could see in the TEAMGROUP X1 MAX review. The performance drops by 30-50%, which is still not terrible for longer work. For some reason, it’s the only test where we can see it.

The CrystalDiskMark results are significantly better. Our test rig can see up to 1.06GB/s read and around 977MB/s write. Both results are high, while the write bandwidth is higher than specified.

Random low queue (Q1T1) could be better, as the recently reviewed Silicon Power PX10 SSD could make 20% higher results. On the other hand, the DS72 is faster in random operations and games, even though synthetic tests suggest otherwise.

The PCMark 10 Storage benchmark results are higher than the PX10 SSD or any other USB3.2 Gen2x1 we tested.

The same story applies to the 3DMark Storage Benchmark. We typically see a 1k score in this benchmark on USB 3.2 Gen2x2 SSDs, so the 1042 score on the DT72 SSD is a pleasant surprise.

Anvil’s Storage Utilities results are also surprisingly good. This benchmark always shows lower-than-expected results, and here, we see lower bandwidth than specified by Silicon Power. However, it’s the best bandwidth we have seen on this class of storage device.

Like the PX10 SSD, the DS72 handles every video resolution well except 12 K at 60 Hz. Since it’s unlikely anyone would use USB storage for such demanding tasks, we see Blackmagic’s benchmark result as pretty high.

So far, the DS72 2TB SSD is the fastest in a thumb drive form factor we reviewed, and it beats many regular USB SSDs. Anyone who searches for small storage without the need for a USB cable will be satisfied with what the DS72 has to offer.
