4 Ways to Help Employees Adapt to Artificial Intelligence

Many employees may have concerns when it comes to implementing artificial intelligence in the workplace. There are many common myths and conceptions that AI will ultimately replace all manual workers. As employees can be fearful of change that is brought on by the implementation of artificial intelligence, here are four ways to help your employees adapt to a changing workplace that uses artificial intelligence.

1. Implement Explainable AI

Implementing explainable AI is a great way to help your employees adapt to AI itself. Explainable AI is artificial intelligence that is able to inform humans about why it made the choice or came to the decision that it made. This still puts human employees back in control as it requires them to reason with the decisions that AI has made. 

For example, if AI comes to a conclusion after assessing raw data, it will then explain why it got to that point. This then allows humans to decide if they agree or disagree with the conclusion after seeing the evidence that supports it. This gives them some power as they get the final say in decision-making. 

2. Talk to Them About How AI Can Enhance Employee Experience

Contrary to popular belief, artificial intelligence can enhance the employee experience. If artificial intelligence can handle the raw data and the complex calculations work, then employees are left with the ability to make something of that data and work. They’re able to focus on the things that AI cannot replicate. This allows them more time to make connections with customers and be more creative in their work once they are freed from the raw data. 

Artificial intelligence can handle work that is administrative so that employees spend less time in their day writing emails and doing the upkeep. AI can also handle repetitive work. Repetitive work can be highly unfulfilling for workers, so passing it off to AI can streamline the task and take a tedious job out of the hands of employees. 

 

3. Help Your Employees Feel Valued

Your top priority must be making your employees feel valued. This should be a common principle of any workplace to keep your employees motivated and willing to work hard every day, but it should be of particular importance as you change what their days may look like. Employee morale is essential to a high-functioning business.

This can begin with a reflection on their pay for the extra work they have to take on by adapting to artificial intelligence. This shows that you, as an employer, understand how they have to adapt to working with these new systems.

Next, it’s often best to implement employee resources for them to make their concerns heard. This will make them feel like they’re being understood and valued regarding any questions or concerns about implementing AI.

4. Promote Learning

Promoting an educational culture at your workplace can also help your employees adapt.  Work to remove the phrase “we’ve always done it this way” from the workplace vocabulary. The best way to benefit your company is to move forward, continue to adapt, and change to a fast-paced tech environment. 

Use the time your employees would have spent doing manual or repetitive tasks to give them specialized classes or training. This is beneficial for both employers and employees. Employees get to advance in their field, and you end up with a more confident, capable, and competent team.
