MSI MPG A1000GS PCIE5 Power Supply Review

Conclusion and Verdict

To power a decent gaming PC nowadays require a power supply that can handle the latest hardware. Over the past few years, I’ve always recommended a minimum PSU of 850W to be on the safe side. But as we enter the age of AI powered PCs with the emphasis on multiple graphics cards (with lots of VRAM) on a single system … we’re starting to a demand for bigger power supplies of 1000W or higher, with multiple 12VVHPWR 16-pin (6×2) power connectors to power multiple GPUs .

Even if you don’t plan to build a PC capable of running Large language models (LLMs) for AI, a large power supply of 1000W or higher is still a good recommendation for future expansion.

OK, with that said … let’s check out the MSI MPG A1000GS PCIE5 power suppply. This PSU uses 100% server-grade electrolytic capacitors rated at 105 degrees, along with CoolMOS and SiC components for longevity and reliability. It’s certified 80Plus Gold and is fully ATX 3.1 and PCIE 5.1 compliant. It features a powerful +12V single rail @ 83.3A, giving you a solid power output of up to 1000W. It’s definitely enough to power any high-end GeForce RTX 50 series.

When it comes to power supply, it’s important to have stability at full load. And I’ve said many times, having a stable +12V line is the key. For our full load tests, we used an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, a MSI MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WiFi motherboard, and a powerful MSI GeForce RTX 5080 Vanguard SOC Launch Edition.

During our tests, both the +12V and +5V lines was extremely solid with minimal fluctuations. The +12V line dropped ever so slightly from 12.216 to 12.168V (-0.048), while the +3 line went from 3.308V to 3.3V (-0.008), which is virtually negligible. For the +5V line, it was rock solid at 5.050V. All-in-all, I’m more than happy with the overall stability of the PSU, and it should more than capable to handle everything you throw at it.

I love the quality of embossed jacket cables cables that comes with copper connectors and integrated cable organisers to allow easier bending and routing. You also get 2 x color-coded 12VHPWR 16-pin PCIE 5 (6×2) power cables, so you know when the cables are fully inserted between your GPU and power supply.

The PSU is cooled with a 135mm fan with a Fluid Dynamic Bearing for efficient cooling and quiet operation. And it comes with a Zero Fan Mode switch that stops the fan from spinning when TDP is below 40%, helping you save energy costs.

Final Thoughts:

The MSI MPG A1000GS PCIE5 is a solid power supply that offers great stability and good power efficiency, and it’s ideal for users who want to power their PCs for gaming or AI workloads.
