ADATA SC740 2TB USB 3.2 Gen2 Portable SSD Review

Performance

The performance has been tested on the desktop PC, which contains an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processor, an ADATA LANCER BLADE 64GB DDR5-6000 memory kit, and a Predator GM7000 2TB M.2 SSD with Win11 Pro x64 installed as the OS drive. All tests were performed on the ADATA SC740 2TB SSD.

Let’s begin as usual with the ATTO Disk Benchmark.

The SC740 performs well in the ATTO benchmark, especially when this benchmark is known to give us lower-than-expected bandwidth. The maximum bandwidth is around 947 MB/s, which is not particularly close to the specified maximum. However, as I mentioned, it’s typical to see lower bandwidth in this benchmark.

CrystalDiskMark, as usual, shows the highest results. On our test PC, we achieved read speeds of 1 GB/s and write speeds of 0.95 GB/s. The screenshot below presents slightly lower bandwidth, but it depends on the pass. Both results are about 50MB/s shy of the specified values. It’s not significant, but still worth mentioning.

In PCMark 10, the results are pretty good for a USB 3.2 SSD. We could say that it is not very high, but above the average for this type of storage. Since the SSD utilizes a 10Gbps, this performance is available for nearly all modern devices with a USB port.

The 3DMark Storage Benchmark score is not particularly important for portable storage, but we decided to run it on all SSDs anyway. Our result is about average for a USB 3.2 SSD. Most fast SSDs we review achieve a score of around 1000.

The Blackmagic Disk Speed Test results suggest that we may encounter issues with real-time writes at 8K and 60 FPS or higher resolutions. However, the SC740 is not designed for these tasks; therefore, the overall test results remain good.

Since the typical random read and write tests are unrealistic for portable storage and take way too much time, in the AIDA64 Disk Benchmark, we focus on sequential read.

The SC740 SSD offers a consistent bandwidth, even though this test took over an hour. The performance is again above the average.

Although the SC740 is not the fastest SSD available, it delivers decent performance, and we experienced no issues with extended high loads. It gives us an impression of a reliable product that should satisfy most users.
