Crucial BX500 480GB SATAIII SSD Review

Performance

The performance has been tested on the Intel Coffee Lake platform which contains the i7-8086K processor and the ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac motherboard. In addition, we have used 16GB HyperX Predator RGB DDR4-4000 RAM, EVGA GTX1080Ti FE graphics card and Enermax Platimax D.F. 750W PSU.

Let’s begin as usual with ATTO Disk Benchmark.

Results in sequential bandwidth are high. We are even reaching maximum possible bandwidth on the SATA controller what in this case is nearly 562MB/s. It’s one of the best results we’ve seen on SATA SSD.

Not much worse results in sequential bandwidth are in CrystalDiskMark. Up to 560MB/s read and 524MB/s write.

Random performance doesn’t look so good but at least low queue 4K read is much higher than I was expecting. Most inexpensive drives offer about 25-30MB/s while the BX500 shows up to 45MB/s.

4KiB Q8T8 and Q32T1 are already related to more complicated operations which require the additional cache to show good numbers. We can see that the performance in these tests is quite low. On the other hand, it’s something that most users at home or in the office shouldn’t care much as they won’t really work in the environment like that.

For sure what most users will see are results based on popular applications and less demanding games what brings us PCMark 8 and PCMark 10.

Even though we’ve seen better results then what can make the BX500 is not bad. Actually, it’s a better score than we could see on competitive SSD.

PCMark 10 score is also good but at least this version of popular benchmark focuses more on tasks where storage is not so much in use. It still counts but hard to tell how much of the total score gives storage. It doesn’t change fact that our test rig with PCMark 10 installed on the BX500 drive performs really well.
