Crucial X10 4TB Portable SSD Review

Performance

The performance has been tested on the Intel platform, which includes the Core Ultra 265K processor, an MSI Z890 Unify-X motherboard, a TeamGroup XTREEM 48GB DDR5-8800 CUDIMM memory kit, and a Predator GM7000 2TB M.2 SSD with Windows 11 Pro x64 installed. All tests were performed on the Crucial X10 4TB SSD.

Let’s begin as usual with the ATTO Disk Benchmark.

As usual, the results in ATTO Benchmark are lower than specified, but the X10 performs well. The maximum read bandwidth is approximately 1.91 GB/s, while the maximum write bandwidth is approximately 1.86 GB/s. Both results are close to the best we have seen on this class of USB SSD.

In CrystalDiskMark, we can see slightly better results. The maximum linear read is 2053 MB/s, and the write is 1982 MB/s. The read bandwidth is marginally lower than the maximum declared, but still one of the highest USB 3.2 results we have seen. Crucial is not specifying write bandwidth, but we can see it’s close to 2 GB/s.

PCMark 10 results are also high and about the best we achieved on a USB 3.2 SSD.

The same trend is also evident in the 3DMark Storage Benchmark. 1159 is a high score for any portable SSD.

Ultimately, the Blackmagic Design benchmark tells us if we can use the storage for high-quality video. As we can see, the X10 handles everything well, except for the 12K DCI 60/ProRes 422HQ format. This is normal, and only high-performance internal SSDs pass the highest resolution. I doubt anyone would think of using a USB SSD for this task, but if we want to, most high-quality formats are still available.

All the results are pretty good and consistent. We haven’t observed significant performance drops in extended write tests, so the X10 appears to be a suitable portable SSD for backups. The maximum performance in our tests is slightly lower than declared, but this discrepancy is unlikely to be significant and may be attributed to the test platform used or services running in the background.
