Kingston MobileLite Wireless Review

Verdict and Conclusion

Kingston has taken the success of their Wi-Drive, which is a mobile/portable wireless hard drive, and developed a product that is in effect, a wireless USB/SD card reader with the added functionality of a charger for mobile devices. I think the Kingston MobileLite Wireless is a nice and novel idea. But it has several areas which needs improvement. Take for example the charging capacity of the MobileLite Wireless. It’s only rated at 1800mAh … that’s enough to charge, say an iPhone 4 up to 75-80% from zero. After that there’s no more juice left. I expected a higher charging capacity of 3000mAh or higher. Another thing to look out for, is that the device is limited to only support up to 3 users/connections.

As a USB charger for mobile devices, it offers fast charging, but I expected the MobileLite Wireless to be a little bit smaller and more compact. I find the device a little too large for my liking. It just feels like I’m carrying another phone. The total dimensions of the device is 124.8mm x 59.9mm x 16.65mm, and weighs in at 98g. Not extremely compact or light-weight as one might expect but still, it does the job as described on the box.

With the backing of Kingston, you know you’re getting a decent product. As far as I’m aware, there isn’t a device on the market quite like it. The MobileLite Wireless is a unique device that’s aimed at users who travel and use their mobile devices a lot, but also wants to share files with ease. The app is readily available, free to download and easy to use.

Our partners over at Amazon are selling the Kingston MobileLite Wireless for around USD $59.99, which I think is OK, but nothing to shout about. Take a further $10 off the price … then I WILL buy one today!

Pros:

  • Unique product (wireless USB/SD card reader + charger)
  • Free app from Apple’s App store or Google’s Play store
  • Supports MP3, WAV, m4v, mp4 (H. 264 video codec), jpg, tiff, pdf
  • Fast charging

Cons:

  • Only support up to 3 users/connections
  • Low charging capacity of only 1800mAh
  • Larger than I expected (in size)

Final words.

The Kingston MobileLite Wireless is a unique device that offers something that a lot of USB/SD card readers don’t … it also doubles as a charger for mobile devices. It offers fast charging and wireless connectivity for sharing files via downloadable apps that’s free and widely available. If Kingston increases the charging capacity, as well as reducing the dimensions of their MobileLite Wireless … then you’ll have a winner here.
