GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER GAMING OC 16G Review

Cyberpunk 2077 Benchmark (4K – Ray Tracing: OverDrive)

CD PROJEKT RED released an update (v1.5) for Cyberpunk 2077 which includes their Ray Tracing: Overdrive option with RTX on and DLSS3 enabled. It’s incredibly demanding on your hardware.

Verdict and Conclusion

Wow,  what can I say? … Well, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Gaming OC is currently one of the fastest graphics card we’ve tested to date (except of course the RTX 4090). It easily outperforms AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and all other GeForce cards we’ve tested in our labs.

This is all thanks to an overclocked GPU running at 2595 MHz (default is 2550 MHz) and 16GB of GDDR6X ram running at 23Gbps. Not to mention Nvidia’s powerful ADA Lovelace architecture with a massive 10,240 CUDA cores, 60 RT cores, 320 Tensor cores, and support for DLSS 3.5.

During our tests, we used our usual test rig which is comprised of an Intel Core i9-14900K processor, Asus Strix Z790-E Gaming motherboard and 32GB of ARES RGB DDR5-7200 memory. We got phenomenal scores in all of our benchmarks, including an impressive high score of 10,672 for Basemark’s Relic of Life, and a Geekbench GPU score of 260,767. For Unigine’s Valley benchmark, we got a score of of 11,591, and a Final Fantasy benchmark score of 22,480. Passmark 10 GPU was 40,431.

For Superposition 1080p extreme and optimized 4K, we got an amazing score of 17,445 and 23,596 respectively. For 3DMark Timespy and Firestrike, it produced excellent scores of 27,919 and 44,456 respectively. And finally, for Speedway and Port Royal, it produce an impressive score of 7,483 and 18,518 respectively. And lastly, we got a DirectX Raytracing score of 90.46 fps and a DLSS score of 41.04 fps.

For Cyberpunk 2077, CD PROJEKT RED released their new update (v2.11), which includes a new benchmark mode. It features their Ray Tracing: Overdrive option with RTX on and DLSS3 enabled. It’s incredibly demanding on your hardware, so we added it to our benchmark tests (see above). The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER did not break a sweat! It produced an astonishing 56.96 frames per second.

The card is requires the new PCIE 5.0 (16-pin 12VHPWR) power cable, so you might need a new power supply what supports this new connector. But luckily, Gigabyte have included a 3 x 8-pin PCIE to 16-pin 12VHPWR adapter with the package, which is great news.

As far as power consumption is concerned, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER has a total power consumption (TBP) of around 320W. However, during our actual full load GPU stress tests, power consumption rarely reached 300W. This was a quite a surprise. Either case, we still recommend a minimum power supply of 750W or higher.

The card is cooled by Gigabyte’s WindForce Cooling system which features an impressive 9 copper heatpipes, a large copper plate, 3 x 110mm unique  blade fans that spin alternately. During our full load tests, the GPU hotspot reached a high of 80 degrees Celsius, with a nominal GPU temperature of around 65 degrees Celsius. These temperatures are fairly low considering the RTX 4080 SUPER’s high TBP of 320W.

The lighting effects of the 3 ring LEDs underneath the cooling fans can be controlled using Gigabyte’s Control Center. You can also use this software to monitor the status of the graphics card including temperatures, GPU load and rpm of the fans.

The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER a is fairly large graphics card, measuring a staggering 342 x 150 x 750mm, so you’ll need to make sure that your chassis has enough room. And to give the card extra stability and protection, it comes with a solid metal backplate and includes a anti-sag bracket to provides better reinforcement, and prevents that ugly-looking sag due to the weight of the graphics card.

The official MSRP of the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Gaming OC, is supposed to be around USD $1,099 … but expect to pay roughly between USD $1,300-$1,500 or more.

So, should you get one? If you already have a RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4080 … then NO! For those who own the older RTX 20 or 30 series … now is the time to consider that upgrade. Although the percentage in performance difference is in the low single digit, between the original RTX 4080 and the new RTX 4080 SUPER, the latter is $200 cheaper at launch.

Final Thoughts

With an overclocked GPU cooled by Gigabyte’s WindForce Cooling system, featuring a massive heatsink with 9 heatpipes and 3 x 110mm unique blade RGB ring fans, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Gaming OC is no doubt, a phenomenal graphics card designed for the most extreme of enthusiast gamers. It outperforms everything we’ve tested to date, all except of course, the RTX 4090.
