Lexar PLAY 2230 PCIe 4.0 1TB SSD Review

Today, we ‘ll be taking a look at the Lexar PLAY 2230 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. It’s powered by a Silicon Motion SM2269XT SSD controller, and offers a sequential read speed up to 5200MB/s, and a sequential write speed up to 4700MB/s.

The ultra-compact M.2 2230 form factor is perfect for handheld gaming consoles, Steam Deck, ROG Ally and laptops.

It features SLC dynamic cache which helps to keep load times and downloads fast, to minimize wait times and the low power consumption ensures extended battery life. What’s more, it’s also backwards-compatible with PCIe Gen3.

Whether you own a handheld gaming console, Steam Deck, ROG Ally or laptop, the Lexar PLAY 2230 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD will provide the fast storage you need!

“DRAM-Less” SSDs are becoming the norm, now you might think having no DRAM would affect its performance. Well, not quite. Having no DRAM means less complex PCB, a smaller or simpler flash controller, and lower power consumption. Unless your workload requires a consistently large amount of write/read performance, then perhaps you might need a SSD with DRAM. But for 99% of home users, this does not apply.

Confused and NAND flash memory? Well, there are several types of NAND flash memory used in most of today’s SSDs. The two most popular are SLC and MLC, and now TLC. Here’s a little background taken from HowToGeek.

I would like to send a big thank you to Lexar for the review sample! Here is a snippet of what they have to say about themselves on their website:

Since establishment, Lexar has worked diligently to bring unparalleled value to our customers. We define value as providing well-designed, innovated, and user-friendly products that meet the expectations of customers and enterprises looking for memory solutions to count on.

The Lexar Quality Labs are a group of testing facilities where all Lexar memory card, card reader, and USB flash drives undergo extensive testing to ensure performance, quality, compatibility, and reliability. This provides customers with the highest level of confidence when using Lexar products to capture, manage, move, and store the memories that matter.

We have a team of dedicated lab technicians that test Lexar products with more than 1,100 intended digital devices, including:

  • DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras
  • Video cameras
  • Drones
  • Action cameras
  • Mobile phones
  • Desktop, laptop, and tablet computers
  • Card readers
  • Gaming consoles

In addition to device compatibility testing, technicians in the Lexar Quality Labs also test products for durability by putting them through various vibration, temperature, electric shock, impact, and strength tests. This rigorous testing ensures all Lexar products offer the quality and reliability customers have come to expect from Lexar.

We’ve already tested several SSDs from Lexar, including the NM710, the NM790 and the NM800 Pro, all of which offered good read/write speeds. I’m expecting the same for PLAY 2230. OK, let’s jump straight in and start by taking a look at the specifications on the next page.

You can buy the Lexar PLAY 2230 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD for around USD $109.99 $85 (sale) from Amazon – https://amzn.to/3vKjNfs
