MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 Power Supply Review (with 16-PIN 12VHPWR Connector)

Over the next few months, we’re going to be seeing a lot of new power supplies featuring the new 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connector for next-gen graphics cards. Yes, that’s right … Nvidia’s upcoming high-end GeForce RTX 40 series of graphics card (and possibly AMD too) is said to use this new type of connector, which is smaller and not compatible with exisiting PCI-E connectors. This unfortunately means you’ll need a new power supply.

Today, we’ll be taking a quick look at the MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 Power Supply which features the new 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connector for next-gen graphics cards. We’ve already review the original MSI MPG A1000G PSU last month, and we thought it was a high quality modular power supply, that offered solid stability, 80Plus Gold and quiet operation … all at an affordble price.

The MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 features a powerful single +12V rail at 83.5A delivering a total power output of up to 1000W. Now that’s mighty impressive. The power supply does not offer any RGB lighting, but it does come with the 80Plus Gold certification and to ensure stability, it’s built with high quality Japanese capacitors.

Along with the usual flat modular cables, the package now includes 2 special 12VHPWR cables featuting the new 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connectors. The first cable is a 600W 16-pin to 16-pin, while the 2nd cable is a 16-pin to 2 x PCI-E (6+2 Pin). We still don’t know the real importance or how these new 16-pin PCIe 5.0 power cables will affect future PC builds. Will all new next-gen graphics cards be using this new standard? Only time will tell.

At the time review, we didn’t have a Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series graphics card on-hand, so we’re unable to fully test the 16-pin PCIE 5.0 power connectors. However, we’re still able to test the PSU as normal, using an Intel Core i9-12900KF, an ASRock Z690 Tachi RAZER Edition motherboard, 32GB of Patriot Viper RGB DDR5-6200 ram, Adata Legend 840 1TB SSD, and a Radeon RX 6750 XT graphics card.
